NCMA Releases Updated 5th Edition of Manufactured Stone Veneer Installation Guide

The National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) aannounces the publication of the 5th Edition of the Installation Guide and Detailing Options for Compliance with ASTM C1780 for Adhered Manufactured Stone Veneer. This guide provides valuable information and guidance on design and construction of adhered manufactured stone veneer systems to ensure quality and long-term performance. The updated 5th Edition of the guide includes many new additions and improvements. Several key changes are included below.
First, the updated guide includes recommendations on applying MSV over continuous insulation. These provisions include fastener spacing over continuous insulation up to several inches thick, depending on the overall weight of the system. Use of these recommendations, which are coordinated with requirements in the 2018 International Building Code, help to ensure structural integrity of the adhered veneer system when installed over thick continuous insulation.
Next, the Guide now includes an enhanced section on choice of mortars for MSV systems. Mortar plays several important roles in adhered veneer systems, and the 5th Edition of the Guide includes specific recommendations on the type of mortar for systems components. A new table is also included to simplify recommendations based on the project application.
The third major inclusion is provisions for installation of MSV using cement board as a substrate. The use of cement board as a replacement for lath and scratch coat is growing, and the Guide now includes specific recommendations, as well as construction details, when cement board is used as the backing.
“The updated 5th Edition of the Installation Guide includes critical updates to ensure that the guide contains state-of-the-art information,” says Brian Miller, Provia Products and Chair of NCMA’s Manufactured Stone Veneer Committee. “The Guide is used throughout the construction industry, and is considered the authority on proper installation of adhered manufacture stone veneer systems.”
